The New South Wales Government is calling for local farmers, industry groups and the wider community to comment on the draft Namoi water sharing plan for the area’s unregulated rivers and alluvial groundwater.

NSW Water Commissioner, David Harris, announced that the Draft Water Sharing Plan for the Namoi Unregulated Alluvial Water Sources will form one of the next series of plans being prepared for unregulated rivers and alluvial water across the state.

“Unregulated rivers and alluvial groundwater aquifers are extremely valuable to the people of NSW. The majority of the inland rivers are unregulated and have some of the state’s most significant ecosystems, and much of our aquatic biodiversity,” said Mr Harriss.

“The draft Namoi plan covers 23 unregulated water sources and four alluvial aquifers within the Namoi catchment, which include the townships of Quirindi, Werris Creek, Manilla, Gunnedah, Boggabri, Narrabri and Wee Waa.”

Mr Harriss said the draft plan includes rules for protecting the environment, managing water extraction, and facilitating water trading.

The draft Namoi unregulated and alluvial water sharing plan is on public exhibition from 24 October 2011 until 2 December 2011.
