The Queensland Government has invited communities and stakeholders to view the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the expansion of Xstrata Coal’s Newlands Coal Mine.

State Minister for Environment, Andrew Powell, said the public now has until 29 October to make written submissions.

“Xstrata Coal has prepared an EIS under the Environmental Protection Act for its proposal to expand both open cut and underground mining activities, which would extend the life of the mine until 2042,” Mr Powell said.

“If approved, the Newlands Coal Mine extension would allow the mine to continue to produce more than 10 million tonnes of coal and contribute up to $100 million to the Australian economy each year.

Mr Powell said the EIS examined the impacts the mine could have on the surrounding environment, including groundwater systems, waterways, and protected vegetation.

“Xstrata Coal will be required to consider and respond to public submissions received on the EIS by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

“The final EIS will be assessed by both the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments.”
