SA Water has been awarded millions of dollars in a lengthy dispute with United Water over pricing.

SA Water had threatened to sue French-owned United Water, which manages South Australia's water infrastructure, for breaching its contract,  but the two companies instead agreed to appoint independent experts to assess the claim.

SA Water says the experts concluded United Water must pay back almost $14 million for the period between 2001 and 2006.

The company says it expects an examination of the period between 2006 and 2011 to begin now.

United Water recently lost the contract to manage Adelaide's water infrastructure to a new consortium.
