The Bureau of Meteorology's mobile website has been recognised for its useful and simple design at this year's Australian Mobile and App Design Awards.

As one of the most relied-upon government services, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) needed to deliver a simple, user-friendly site for people to access weather information wherever they may be.

BOM’s site allows this with ruthless simplicity and a concise layout.

“The mobile website was designed following intensive market research to identify the weather information needs and habits of the public and specific industry groups,” said environment spokesperson Senator Simon Birmingham.

“The research showed that mobile website visitors wanted a 'full weather snapshot' to help them make practical decisions and plan their day on the go,” Senator Birmingham said.

“The Bureau's website is the only mobile weather service that provides pinpointed weather forecasts using a six kilometre grid, which provides users with accurate and localised information,” he said.

The Bureau says a stand-along weather app is now in the works for all major mobile platforms.
