The Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for multiple Research Services Officers (Finfish Fisheries) to be part of the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) within PIRSA. The roles report to the Sub-program Leader Finfish Fisheries.

The Fisheries Science Program undertakes research and development activities on the fisheries and habitats of the South Australian continental shelf and gulfs for the South Australian government on behalf of all stakeholders in those fisheries - principally abalone, prawn, blue crab, rock lobster, marine scale and pelagic fishes.

The Finfish Subprogram conducts research and monitoring on the South Australian Marine Scalefish Fishery, and Lakes and Coorong Fishery. The primary focus of the group is on the population dynamics and fisheries biology of key finfish species and application of the daily egg production method to estimate spawning biomass. Fishery dependent and biological data are integrated in stock assessments that determine the status of harvested populations. The primary outputs are stock assessment reports that provide the scientific basis for sustainable fisheries management. Scientific findings are published in peer-reviewed reports, and national and international journals. Research findings are also communicated directly to PIRSA fisheries managers, fishery licence holders and national and international scientists through relevant steering committees, meetings and conferences.

The Research Services Officer (Finfish Fisheries) supports the research outcomes of the Finfish sub-program, including the successful and timely delivery of research, thereby contributing to the professionalism and competitive position of the organisation as a research provider by enhancing the expertise within the program. The primary duties of this position will be to undertake fieldwork and laboratory duties. The incumbent will be required to operate on research and commercial fishing vessels, and undertake laboratory analysis of egg and adult sampling, and fish ageing. Data entry and management are also a part of the role. There will also be a need to undertake fieldwork and laboratory duties to support research outcomes in other sub-programs
