Team Leader, Aquatic Ecosystems & Quality

The department provides relevant scientific knowledge through our monitoring and investigative services to the Council spanning land quality and terrestrial ecosystems, air quality and climate, surface water, groundwater and the coast, including associated ecosystems.

We are offering a unique opportunity to be part of our vision.  The Team Leader, Aquatic Ecosystems & Quality is responsible for leading a team of scientists and monitoring officers who are working closely with the Council, whaitua http://www.gw.govt.nz/whaitua-committees/, external research providers, stakeholders and mana whenua to provide high quality scientific expertise and advice that informs the sustainable management of the Wellington region’s freshwater and coastal ecosystems.

The Team Leader, Aquatic Ecosystems & Quality will be a people manager with leadership passion and experience.  They will use their knowledge of freshwater and/or coastal science to provide mentoring and direction to the team. They will oversee the team’s delivery of relevant, timely and well communicated science across the organisation and to our stakeholders, communities and mana whenua

The Team Leader will also play a strategic role as a member of the Environmental Science leadership team, with four other team leaders and the science manager.  This includes strategic leadership of the department, people leadership, and active engagement internally and externally to provide quality science services.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A passion and commitment to excellent leadership, with proven people management skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence.  You will want to support your people professionally and personally
  • An ability to think strategically, and to develop a strong organisational and client focus
  • An applicable post graduate degree qualification (or equivalent experience) majoring in environmental science, freshwater or coastal science or related area – you will have technical expertise in science, but you want to mentor and provide context and direction for your team, not ‘do’ the science yourself
  • Knowledge of the key environmental issues of the Wellington Region
  • An understanding of the importance of building and maintaining positive durable working relationships both internally and with external stakeholders and communities
  • A positive attitude, solutions not problems focussed, with a good sense of humour
  • Experience with aligning, designing, planning and implementing programmes to predetermined timeframes
  • Ability to produce and present high quality written and oral reports at a professional level for a range of audiences
  • A sound understanding of  relevant Resource Management legislation at a local, regional and national government level
  • Understanding of environmental analysis and database systems and a proven ability for innovation in information dissemination
  • A commitment to Health and Safety leadership
