Research Technician - Aquaculture Biologist

  • Manage animal stocks and aquaria based trials in our labs on beautiful Bribie Island

The position:

As a Research Technician in aquaculture biology you will undertake a wide range of operational aspects of both seawater and freshwater experimental systems including:

  • system monitoring and control,
  • animal rearing,
  • risk identification,
  • problem solving,
  • managing complex data sets.  

In the management of animal stocks and aquaria based trials, you will design and perform experiments, undertake data collection as well as routine laboratory analysis. You will also design new processes or apparatus to meet special circumstances and test possible solutions to resolve problems.

This is an autonomous role requiring regular weekend and periodic after hours work and short field trips.  At times you may be required to oversee the activities of less experienced staff and provide guidance on experimental techniques and protocols.

Location:      Bribie Island, Queensland
Salary:          AU $61k to AU 78k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

As a minimum requirement, you will hold tertiary qualifications and have sound experience in Aquaculture or a related field. You will also have:

  • excellent communication skills and professional behaviours,
  • the ability to effectively manage a number of competing priorities,
  • recent experience in the husbandry of crustacean and fish for research or production,
  • experience in prawn broodstock husbandry, algal and brine shrimp culture, larval rearing of crustaceans, and in management of water treatment systems,
  • experience in the maintenance, handling and sampling of Atlantic salmon, and in the management of tropical and temperate recirculation systems for aquatic animals.
