Postdoctoral Fellowship Sea Ice Modeller

  • Are you a highly motivated recent (or near) PhD graduate with expertise in sea ice dynamics or ocean modelling?
  • Prestigious Postdoctoral Fellowship on offer - kick-start your research career
  • Join CSIRO's Ocean & Atmosphere world leading team of researchers

The Position

Postdoctoral Fellowships at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

This postdoc position will contribute to CSIRO Decadal climate forecast project by advancing sea ice modelling.  Specifically, the position would pursue research to improve the sea ice realism through modifying sea ice parameters and code.  The candidate would also be involved in research exploring ways to assimilate sea ice information into the Climate Analysis Forecast Ensemble system and in the assessment of the ability of data assimilation to improve sea ice behaviour.  The position could also contribute to research exploring the potential predictability of sea ice and assessing the ability to forecast sea ice on seasonal to multi-year times scales.

You will join a dynamic group of researchers interested in the climate system and the applications of models to make useful climate forecasts.

Your duties will include:

  • Under the supervision of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO Decadal Climate Forecasting project that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Use coupled atmosphere, ocean and sea ice models to explore and understand key dynamics of the system and in particular the role of sea ice.
  • Increase knowledge of key process and dynamical understanding to explain the variability of the sea ice  and the connection it has on climate variability. Produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.

Location:              Hobart, TAS
Salary:                  AU $80K - $91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure:                 Specified term of 3 years
Reference:            56719

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as sea ice dynamics or ocean modelling.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the sea ice dynamics and the climate processes driving sea ice variability.
  • Demonstrated experience with numerical sea ice modelling, in particular the ability to modify sea ice parameters and asses the performance of sea ice simulations to draw novel interpretation and conclusions.
  • Capacity to carry out original, independent, and innovative research with a minimum of direct supervision.
  • Sophisticated programming skills to analyse large model data sets and compare them rigorously to observations.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences and as evidenced by a record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals.
