The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD graduate with a desire for substantial impact in natural resource management and conservation, and an interest in applying deep-learning video analytics for fisheries management.

You as the successful candidate will join an internationally recognised team in machine learning and fisheries management. You will work on deep learning-based video analysis for species identification in electronic monitoring of fishing operations.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, influential research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Develop and implement machine learning applications for fish detection and species identification using video footage, and supervising the preparation of training data.
  • Deliver an error rate analysis of the fish detection and species recognition algorithms. 

Location:      Hobart TAS, or Sydney NSW
Salary:          AU$80K - AU$91K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering and other relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting research and development activities in image and video analysis, computer vision, more specifically in the area of machine learning based image/video analysis for object detection and classification.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing software with one or more programming languages such as: C++, C#, Python, Matlab.

Owing to the terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant full time postdoctoral experience.
