The Position

CSIRO’s Oceans and Atmosphere is seeking to appoint two Hydrochemists to join the Hydrochemistry Team.

The Hydrochemistry Team provides specialised analytical chemistry services to Australia’s Marine National Facility (MNF) and to scientific research programs, as well as supporting the scientific operations of the MNF Research Vessel RV Investigator.

In this role, you will participate in scientific research by providing marine chemistry services specialising in sampling and chemical analysis of dissolved nutrients, salinity and oxygen in seawater.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in scientific research voyages (up to 85 days a year) and contribute to the achievement of the research objectives by carrying out analytical work to a very high standard under sometimes difficult conditions with minimum supervision.
  • Collect and analyse seawater samples for a variety of nutrient species including nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate and silicate, and salinity and dissolved oxygen whilst at sea, and with the application of specific quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under limited direction in support of scientific research.

Salary:          $62K - $79K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • Tertiary study in chemistry (e.g. BSc/technical certificate) or equivalent experience in chemistry with an emphasis on analytical chemistry and/or marine chemistry.
  • The ability to obtain a Certificate of Medical Fitness to a standard required by the Australian Antarctic Division for seagoing operations and a Maritime Security Identification Card.
  • The ability to obtain a Certificate of Sea Safety Training issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority in accordance with Marine Orders Part 3.
  • A willingness and ability to work at sea and to travel extensively in order to provide operational support in domestic or foreign ports for up to ~60 days at a time.
