Quantitative Fisheries Scientist

The Position

CSIRO’s Oceans and Atmosphere is seeking to appoint a Quantitative Fisheries Scientist.

As the successful candidate you will work within a team that conducts fisheries research including stock status estimation in Australian and international fisheries. You will manage, synthesise and analyse large data sets and work with scientific databases of commercial fishing data.

Your duties will include

  • Undertake research and analysis relevant to the management of Australian fisheries.
  • Interact with other CSIRO researchers in identifying research priorities and developing new project proposals.
  • Assist in leading small research projects, including the negotiation of resource requirements.
  • Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in quality journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.
  • Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for client satisfaction.

Salary:          AU$97,276 - AU$105,269 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need

  • A PhD or equivalent research experience in quantitative population dynamics or natural resource modelling (e.g. simulation, optimisation, estimation, control theory, and management strategy evaluation).
  • Computer programming ability in R, C, Python or similar language.
  • Experience in the initiation of original research work and development of innovative approaches to research problems.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team.
