The Aquatic Animal Health team is a cornerstone of CSIRO’s Livestock and Aquaculture Program. Focused on the diagnosis, control and mitigation of diseases in aquaculture, our multidisciplinary team works hand-in-hand with industry partners to provide targeted and relevant R&D. The role of the Aquaculture Biotechnologist will be to conduct hands-on laboratory experiments under the guidance of senior project leaders. The role will require multidisciplinary research approaches including molecular biology, cell biology, genome engineering and microbiology.

Your duties will include:
  • Making significant contributions to the interpretation and communication of research or technological results and collaborating on drafting presentations to, and/or detailed written reports for, clients and the scientific and/or technology community.
  • Under general direction participating in planning projects and accepting responsibility for the scheduling and completion of major parts of projects, including allocating and directing tasks where appropriate.
  • Providing coaching, on-the-job training and instruction to colleagues, on activities pertaining to the immediate work area and responsibilities, allocating activities, directing tasks and managing resources to meet objectives, as required.
  • Adapting and/or developing original experimental methods, equipment, software, concepts and ideas in support of existing and further research, promptly addressing where methods may not be defined and initiative is required in seeking new approaches to meet experimental and/or technological needs.
  • Communicating openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Working collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, and business unit to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.

Salary: AU$83k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation (pro rata)
Tenure: Specified Term of 3 Years (Part-Time – 6 days/ftn)

To be considered you will need:
  • A relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in Aquatic Animal Biology with a focus on Molecular Science.
  • Demonstrated experience with nucleic acid purification, cloning, PCR, and routine bioinformatic processes in non-model species.
  • Sound knowledge of reproductive biology of major Aquaculture species.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in genome engineering and manipulation of reproductive material (eggs and sperm).
  • Previous experience in diagnostic or molecular assay development.
