Research Scientist - Environmental Data Analyst (Hydrology and Geomorphology)

CSIRO Land and Water is seeking a motivated Research Scientist – Environmental Data Analyst (Hydrology and Geomorphology) to join the Material Fluxes Team. This team focuses on research in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments and quantifies and evaluates the influence of land management on the environment. 

As the successful candidate, you will be involved in the analysis and interpretation of data collected from a range of sites at various spatial scales. You will help lead the integration and translation of field data with remotely sensed products and with spatial models of surface processes. Together these data sets will be integrated into digital workflows and used in multi-scale decision support tools. 

In addition to work in the GBR catchments, you will work with the Digital Water and Landscapes projects using your skills to facilitate, test and support integrated data pipelines arising from multiple sources, and from multiple projects over a range of scales. This will improve CSIRO’s agility in the development and delivery of regional-to-national solutions in landscape management.

Your duties will include:

  • Under limited direction, assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carrying out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation. 
  • Presenting results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients and/or write scientific papers for publication.  
  • Undertaking analysis of hydrology and terrain data to support the evaluation of landscape restoration projects over different spatial and temporal scales.
  • Working with multidisciplinary teams to develop workflows that integrate different data pipelines that will underpin CSIRO's Digital Landscapes and Water Strategic Initiative.

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as Geomorphology, Hydrology or Engineering coupled with relevant research experience.
  • A strong background and system understanding of landscape scale terrain analysis and the application and interpretation of terrain data in the context of water, agricultural and ecological resource assessments.
  • Experience in the acquisition, analysis and management of large spatial datasets using a range of programming languages including GIS, Python and/or R.
  • Experience in applying a range of statistical analysis techniques to field and/or remotely sensed data.
  • A history of developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • A publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications. 
  • A current class C driver’s licence, to be willing and able to travel domestically and undertake fieldwork and undergo a pre-employment medical examination prior to commencement.
