Deputy Director / Science Director, CSIRO Oceans & Atmosphere

CSIRO’s Oceans and Atmosphere Business Unit (BU) provides knowledge to manage Australia’s marine areas and atmospheric environment.  CSIRO’s Ocean and Atmosphere research is uniquely placed to deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits for Australia and the region.  

As the Science Director, you will provide scientific vision, leadership and direction to the BU and manage strategic relationships and alliances with collaboration partners to deliver high quality science of national interest. You will develop and implement a strategic capability plan for people and infrastructure aligned to the scientific and strategic direction. The role is deputy to the Business Unit Director.

Your duties will include:

  • Impact Science Leadership: Provide strategic science leadership to ensure the Business Unit remains globally scientifically competitive; develop a scientific culture of excellence; drive effective research capability in accordance with research and investment priorities; and develop new science platforms, be accountable for their performance and translation into impact science areas.
  • Capability Leadership: Strive for ‘Zero Harm’ through a commitment to a healthy, safe and environmentally sustainable workplace; support the Business Unit Leadership Team to identify, attract, develop and retain world class talent; and undertake leadership development and succession planning for Research Directors and key science leaders, to build the science leadership pipeline.
  • Engagement and Partnerships: Manage external scientific relationships to advance CSIRO’s interests, science delivery and impact; provide scientific representation nationally and internationally; build strategic alliances with industry and the University community to execute CSIRO strategy collaboratively; and lead external and internal Business Unit reviews.
  • Resource Leadership: Develop long term infrastructure plans; work with the BU Leadership Team to effectively prioritise and deploy capability and resources to meet current and future requirements; and manage CSIRO Fellows.

Location:  Melbourne, Canberra or Perth preferred. Hobart and Brisbane also considered
Salary:  An attractive salary package is offered including up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Established international eminence in the Oceans & Atmosphere domain with evidence of effective world-class science leadership.
  • Evidence of successful leadership of platform, discovery and impact science at the scale of the O&A Business Unit.
  • Proven strong engagement skills and strategic relationship management that grows new science opportunities and supports commercial outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, retain, empower and develop world class talent and to promote wellbeing and foster cross organisational capability.
  • A track record in supporting a senior leader in optimal positioning, organisational alignment and science delivery in the national interest.
  • Demonstrated track record in planning for science infrastructure to meet short and long term needs.
  • Values and behaviours are exemplary, and actively promotes cross Business Unit collaboration.

Eligibility

This role is open to Australian and New Zealand Citizens and Australian Permanent Residents.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and provide a National Police Check or equivalent.
