The Opportunity
Icon Water’s Network Operations team have an exciting opportunity for an individual with great analytical and service-oriented skills to be our next Network Operator.

In this role, you will operate our remote sewage treatment plants; raw water pump stations (excluding Googong raw water pump station); and electrical and mechanical (E&M) assets that form part of the bulk sewer and water distribution networks (e.g., water and sewer pump stations, sewer vent fans and flow control equipment).

A day in the life
In consultation with other stakeholders ensure effective and efficient operation of Icon water assets.

  • Operate assets, including manually operating equipment, adjusting settings, lab checks, chemical adjustments of treatment plants and dosing points in the water and sewer networks, visual checks and other operations as required.
  • Perform complex on-site tests and adjustments where necessary including process sampling and testing, and operational analysis and adjustments.
  • Monitor and control chemical and fuel usage and inventory to ensure continuous efficient and cost-effective operation of sites operated by Network Operators.
  • Monitor, operate and control Icon Water’s remote plants using available procedures and authorisations. Ensure processes and equipment are operating within authorised standards.
  • Monitor and react to issues at sites operated by Network Operators that will impact Icon Water’s environmental obligations, including on site notification of environmental incidents to the EPA and the business.
  • Maintain an understanding of Icon Water’s water and sewage networks, and an ability to anticipate the impacts of operational changes within these networks.
  • Conduct complex fault finding, diagnosis and rectification on assets operated by Network Operator.
  • Plan site inspections and report regularly to the Coordinator Network Operations detailing monthly operational activities, progress and any problems encountered while conducting the duties of a Network Operator.
  • Respond to site alarms and participate in an on-call roster.
  • Monitor SCADA trends and act on anomalies occurring within the assets operated by Network Operator.
  • Ensure customers are notified of all planned service interruptions caused by operational changes of assets operated by Network Operators, in accordance with Icon’s procedures and standards of service.
  • Interpret standards, guidelines and procedures to safely execute work in accordance with these documents, while reporting any procedural issues to Coordinator Network Operations.
  • Possess significant expertise/specialisation in an electrical or mechanical field, and significant experience working with field-based assets.
  • Have the ability to work unsupervised and independently and to prioritise work tasks based on network needs and constraints.
  • Participate in an on-call roster that responds to faults of assets operated by EMRPO Network Operator.

Provide input as subject matter expert for assets operated by Network Operators as needed.

  • Assist in the review or development of documents such as work instructions, AMP schedules, O&M manuals and new Icon Water assets.
  • Identify issues to be included in the annual maintenance and capital works programs such as equipment requiring overhaul or upgrade.
  • Ability to identify and recommend improvements to asset operations to improve efficiency or to increase operational capability of assets.
  • Assist with managing minor projects as directed.
  • Attend meetings and provide technical advice on delegated projects.
  • Assist in the development of CAPEX improvement works for the network assets.

Additional Duties

  • Act as OH&S representative for the section or report issues to the acting OH&S representative for the section.
  • Other duties within the employee’s skill, competence and training.

Our ideal candidate will possess:

  • Possession of a trade-based qualification or technical certificate/diploma in mechanical, electrical or operational discipline from a recognised tertiary institution
  • Significant knowledge and experience in the operation of mechanical & electrical equipment found in the water and wastewater industry.
  • Significant experience in complex water and wastewater network activities and operations, apply independent judgement on water and wastewater network operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintenance coordination with a proven ability to apply optimisation techniques to drive value for money.
  • Knowledge of water supply and sewerage networks, systems and operation, including treatment processes aligning with industry best practice.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Icon’s water supply and sewerage standards, relevant codes of practice and industry standards.
  • Experience (or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn) in using computing systems for the purpose of issuing work packs, entering job details and reviewing operational data.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a small team.
  • Possession of a current driver’s licence
