We are seeking an experienced engineer and/or scientist to further develop, test and operate a streamflow forecasting system for the 7-day streamflow forecasting service.
The Bureau of Meteorology is an Executive Agency in the Environment portfolio of the Australian Government.
As Australia's national weather, climate and water agency, the Bureau’s expertise and services assist Australians and other nations in preparing for, and responding to the harsh realities of their natural environment. Through regular forecasts, warnings, monitoring and advice, the Bureau provides one of the fundamental and most widely used services of government.
The Bureau contributes to national social, economic, cultural and environmental goals by providing observational, meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic services and by undertaking research into science and environment related issues in support of its operations and services.
The Bureau’s water information role has been expanded through the Commonwealth Water Act 2007 which is enhancing the quality and utility of Australia’s water information by producing the national water account, water resource assessments and water availability forecasting services. These responsibilities add to the Bureau’s existing responsibilities for flood forecasting and warnings. The program includes development and maintenance of an integrated, national water information system freely accessible to the public (www.bom.gov.au/water).
The Extended Hydrological Prediction section (EHP) has been established to develop seasonal, 7-day and long term water availability and streamflow forecasting services. The seasonal streamflow forecasting service provides water availability forecasts at important locations across Australia (www.bom.gov.au/water/ssf). The 7-day streamflow forecasting service was released to the public in October 2015 (http://www.bom.gov.au/water/7daystreamflow/). As a precursor of the long term water availability forecasts, the Hydrologic Reference Stations website has been established to track the impact of hydro-climatic conditions on streamflow variations (http://www.bom.gov.au/water/hrs/). The 7-day and seasonal streamflow water availability forecasts assist water managers and users to better plan and manage water use, water allocation, environmental flow management and water trading decisions. The occupant of this position will primarily be involved in the development of the 7-day ensemble streamflow forecasting service.
We are seeking an experienced and motivated engineer and/or scientist with strong data analysis and modelling skills to further develop, test and operate a streamflow forecasting system for the 7-day streamflow forecasting service. The occupant will be involved in the design, development, and operational delivery of the ensemble streamflow forecasting service. This work will involve advanced hydrologic modelling tasks e.g. data analysis, model setup and implementation, and evaluation of forecast performance within an uncertainty framework.
This is a unique opportunity to:
- work in a close, dynamic, diverse and passionate team of specialists working on environmental modelling and service delivery systems;
- collaborate with leading researchers in Australia; and
- help design, develop and deliver ensemble streamflow forecasting products and services that will be useful for the water managers and the public for day-to-day decision making.
