Underwater Explosive Test Facility (UETF) Transition Lead

Executive Level 2 (S&T Level 6)

$123,159 - $147,828 (plus Super)
Fishermans Bend - VIC

The Role

Naval Platform Survivability (NPS), within Maritime Division, is seeking an experienced engineer, for 12 months, to lead the effort in shaping, preparing and planning the transition path of DSTG's newly commissioned underwater explosive test facility (UETF) to industry management and operations.

The UETF is a unique sovereign capability to Australia, primarily designed to support Defence Maritime procurement, vulnerability and sustainment programs, including the continuous naval ship building enterprise. The UETF offers significant and flexible potential for national and international defence and commercial industries and academia to undertake research and development in a range of underwater shock (from either explosives or alternative shock generating technologies) and non-explosive activities.

The UETF Transition Lead will work with a diverse team across Defence (DSTG, CASG, RAN) and industry and academia to develop requirements documentation that effectively covers current and emerging Defence needs; plan a transition pathway and be active in identifying and proposing mitigation strategies to meet capability risks during transition.

About our Team

Naval Platform Survivability (NPS) is part of the Maritime Division, within the Maritime Platform Performance (MPP) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC). The research in MPP covers naval architectures, power and energy systems, material design, platform vulnerability and recoverability. MSTC outcomes are focused on improving the operation and sustainment of the present and future Navy fleet.

NPS leads the research and development of advanced modelling and technologies to support ADF surface ships and submarines in the areas of material analysis and design; fire-fighting and atmosphere; platform vulnerability and recoverability to underwater and air weapon effects.

NPS supports Defence in providing expert advice, design assurance activities and the transitioning of innovative methods and solutions to RAN to ensure the present and future fleet is available, operational and with a sustained presence. We achieve this by nurturing our talent and partnering with internationally recognised organisations to remain at the cutting edge of scientific developments in naval platform survivability.

Our Ideal Candidate
You are an experienced engineer with knowledge of trials programs and capable of managing facilities and laboratories to meet safety, regulatory and industry standards. You have the technical expertise to lead the engagement within Defence and with diverse stakeholders to ensure the UETF capability delivers on its potential to support the naval ship building enterprise.

You are proficient in program management and can communicate effectively to a wide audience both the strategic, technical and programmatic details. You can envisage and plan the transition pathway to enhance Defence S&T capability in the area of underwater explosion research and the assessment of maritime platform/system responses to underwater shocks.

You can work independently under limited guidance, and are active in identifying and proposing activities to address emerging issues and risks to program delivery. This role entails regular travel from Melbourne to Nagambie so our ideal candidate will have a driver’s license and be available for monthly short trips (approximately 1-2 days) to the UETF site.

Application Closing Date: Wednesday 1 December 2021
