Regional Recovery Officers - various locations

About the Agency

The National Drought and North Queensland Flood Response and Recovery Agency (the Agency) was recently established by the Prime Minister to lead a national response to the drought affecting large parts of the country and to continue supporting North Queensland communities affected by wide-spread flooding in early 2019.  The Agency reports to the Minister for Water Resources, Drought, Rural Finance, Natural Disaster and Emergency Management.

The Agency’s guiding principle is “Locally led, locally understood and locally implemented” and the Agency brings together all levels of government, non-government and key industry representatives to work with and support people who are impacted by the flood and drought.

About the role and our ideal candidate

The Agency reports directly to the Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency, and works collaboratively with primary producers, communities, all levels of government, and agricultural organisations to support those who are living through the immediate and longer-term effects of the 2019 floods in North Queensland and drought, ensuring they’re given the right level and type of support and advice at the right time, and are able to better prepare for and withstand future economic shocks.

The Agency’s guiding principle is “Locally led, locally understood and locally implemented” and the Agency brings together all levels of government, non-government and key industry representatives to work with and support people who are impacted by the flood and drought.

The role and our ideal candidate

Regional Recovery Officers ensure the Australian Government is well connected with communities affected by the flood and drought.

The ideal candidate will need to be proactive, resilient, and flexible with well-developed communications and engagement skills and a sound understanding of the issues facing rural and regional Australia.

As a Regional Recovery Officer, you will work independently on assigned activities for a designated region and as part of a national team, when required. Using an Agency vehicle, you will be required to travel extensively within your region and on a regular basis.  Travel to other locations, such as the Agency’s offices in Brisbane or Canberra, will also be required.

You are expected to apply sound judgement and adopt a risk management approach that keeps health, safety and wellbeing at the front of mind.

While an understanding of an experience in government is desirable, it is not essential to the role.

Regional Recovery Officers require the following skills and capabilities (or an ability to quickly gain these capabilities):

Stakeholder engagement, communication and interpersonal skills

You will actively build and maintain relationships with drought impacted farmers, local communities and regional businesses, local and state Government, community groups and industry, along with your colleagues who will be located across Australia.

You will be required to represent the Australian Government at community events and stakeholder engagement activities, with credibility and professionalism.

You will have a coordination role in briefing other Australian Government officers operating in your region and gaining their feedback on matters relevant to the Agency.

Providing advice

Being located within the community, you will provide advice on-the-ground to members of the community on the support that is available to them and on the Australian Government’s approach, including the Drought Response, Resilience and Preparedness Plan.

You will contribute to the development of advice to the Australian Government on drought and flood policy, based on your in depth knowledge and understanding of the issues that impact your designated region.
