The Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER) is Australia’s premiere tropical aquatic research group and is an amalgamation of aquatic expertise from across James Cook University (JCU). The Centre comprises of over 150 staff and 100 post-graduate students and performs research in fields related to water science, resource management and the ecology of water ecosystems.

TropWATER now has an opportunity for a Senior Research Officer to join the team on a full-time; fixed term basis to 31 December 2024. Remuneration at Academic Level B $94,056 - $110,981 p.a. +17% employer superannuation contributions. The position will be based at the Townsville Bebegu Yumba Campus, in the new spacious and modern Australian Tropical Sciences and Innovation Precinct (ATSIP).

What you can accomplish in the role

The Senior Research Officer will initiate research themes and design and lead research projects associated with dugong and dolphin research, with a particular focus on monitoring dugong and dolphin dispersal in order to assess potential environmental impacts on habitats by industrial activities.

What you will bring to the role

As a PhD qualified researcher, you will have experience in the field of marine megafauna research (especially dugongs, marine turtles) including experience in the conduct and data analysis of aerial (fixed-wing and drone) surveys and boat-based operations.
