A sacred women's site near Douglas Hot Springs in the Northern Territory has been disrupted by a government bore, reports say.

The bore initially caused issues with hygiene, prompting a shutdown in 2019. However, it has now been revealed that the bore drew water from a sacred site.

Efforts are underway by traditional owners and the Northern Land Council to address the situation, with potential legal consequences for damage to sacred sites.

The hot springs, also known as Tjuwaliyn, are on Wagiman lands, and a recent land claim settlement aims to resolve the water supply problems by drilling a new bore.

The timeline for resolution remains uncertain.
