Residents are complaining about changes to their water in SA.

MP Leon Bignell from the Mawson region says he has heard a range of complaints from residents south of Adelaide, who have raised issues from skin irritation to deaths of pet fish.

There has been a change to chemicals in the water supply from Myponga Resevoir, but SA Water says the change has improved the taste and safety. The authority says it moved from chlorine to chloramine-treated water earlier this year.

“People are saying they can no longer shower in the water, they can't drink the water, they're getting diarrhoea, skin and hair have become dry; others have complaints about unbearable headaches for a whole month after the changeover happened and chronic itching, sore throat, stomach cramps,” Mr Bignell said.

“One woman said showering was so painful and created such unbearable itchiness that she washed with a bowl of rainwater and is consuming only rainwater.”

Mr Bignell says he has written to Water Minister David Speirs about the matter.

SA Water's senior manager for water expertise and research, Daniel Hoefel, says the water supplier is working “one-on-one with several customers who have [had] some issues with fish”.

“We have got a very extensive water quality monitoring program in place and very happy to let you know that all of those tens of thousands of tests that we do have all come back showing that the water is within the safe limits of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, which is what we are legislated to adhere to under the Safe Drinking Water Act,” he told the ABC.

SA Water says 200,000 South Australian customers are receiving chloraminated water, along with many more in Sydney, Brisbane and elsewhere.

The provider has plans to switch over the outer Adelaide suburbs of Aldinga, Aldinga Beach and Sellicks Beach to chloraminated water from Myponga Reservoir later this year, followed by Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and Goolwa.

Mr Hoefel says SA Water has received “overwhelming feedback” and comments on the “improved taste” of the water.
