The Queensland Government is calling on landholders to finalise and submit their proposals for the release of unallocated water in the Flinders and Gilbert rivers catchment areas.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to this Friday after the Government held a consultation process with local communities.

“There is strong demand for this unallocated water and proponents needed time to ensure they meet the requirements of the tender process,” State Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps said.

Mr Cripps said the release of unallocated water struck the right balance as it presented a significant opportunity for expanding irrigated agriculture in the Gulf without compromising the security of existing entitlements or environmental flows.

“This week is National Water Week and the theme for 2012, Valuing our Water, reminds us of the importance of allocating water resources efficiently and sustainably,” he said.

“A merit-based process with strong candidates will help ensure the best possible use of water resources in the Flinders and Gilbert river catchments.

“We want to see a successful agricultural precinct in the Gulf and this is part of the Newman Government’s commitment to growing a four pillar economy.
