The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) has awarded the River Murray Medal impassioned water campaigner Henry Jones, marking the first time the medal has been awarded to a member of the community since its inception in 1853.

MDBA chief executive Rhondda Dickson congratulated Mr Jones for his tireless effort in campaigning for the river system’s health.

"Mr Jones has been a wonderful role model for many people living in the Basin who are passionate about the health of the River Murray," Dr Dickson said.

"As a commercial fisherman for most of his adult life, Mr Jones has a deep connection to and understanding of this unique and iconic part of Australia.

"In awarding him the River Murray Medal, the MDBA is acknowledging his personal dedication over the years, as well as his passion and wisdom."

River Murray Medals are reserved for individuals who demonstrate outstanding service to the River Murray. Previously the medal has been reserved for water professionals who have given more than a decade of dedicated service to the river.
