Hunter Water is embarking on a comprehensive investigative effort to rejuvenate The Hill 2 Reservoir, one of its oldest assets.

Nestled at the intersection of Tyrell and Brown Streets in Newcastle East, this undertaking aims to curtail leaks, safeguard water quality, and ensure a consistent water supply to the region.

Given the project's complexity and the reservoir's age, the repair process will span the next 18 months.

The initial phase involves excavating the surrounding soil to inspect the original concrete roof structure. These inspections will determine the extent of repairs needed to bring the reservoir back into operation for the summer season.

During this period, residents can expect increased activity in the vicinity of The Reservoir and Tyrell-Brown Street intersection, along with some noise and the presence of construction vehicles.

Work will be conducted from 7 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 4 pm on weekends to minimise traffic disruptions and expedite soil removal.

Soil removal is anticipated to take approximately four weeks, with necessary traffic and pedestrian controls in place.

Once the soil is cleared, roof repairs within the reservoir are projected to take around two months to complete.

Hunter Water has proactively notified neighbouring residents, schools, and businesses, assuring them that no planned interruptions to water supply are expected.

Additional remedial work within the reservoir is slated for mid-2024.

Constructed in 1918, The Hill 2 Reservoir boasts a capacity of five million liters and serves approximately 4,400 properties in Newcastle East. It holds the distinction of being a State Heritage Registered Asset, a testament to its historical significance.
