High levels of winter rain coupled with dam releases have resulted in the Murray River flowing at above average levels, according to the South Australian Water Department.

The department’s Dr Theresa Heneker said that the Murray-Darling Basin has received such a large amount of water, than any extra flow is having a significant effect on the river’s levels.

"We're expecting unregulated flow, that is above entitlement flow until at least September, but if there's further rainfall and inflows upstream then it could continue for a lot longer but at this stage 35,000 is expected to be the peak," she said.

The healthy flows come as the Murray Darling Basin Authority is expected to deliver its final report on environmental flow requirements in October.
