A Western Australian community is still waiting to find out when the Government plans to fix its contaminated drinking water.

The Jigalong community in WA’s east Pilbara region says it has been left in the dark after the Government promised $10 million to fix the community's water and power issues. Meanwhile, bottled water must be brought in and distributed because the local water contains high levels of nitrate and is often unsafe to drink.

Jigalong's acting CEO, Samantha Walton, says the community has had no communication with any government agencies since the announcement, while around 500 residents tackle broken sewers and low water pressure.

Ms Walton says “We haven't seen that $10 million. We're still waiting on that, it seems to be put on the backfoot... they need to pull their finger out. They need to come up here, spend a day here and understand how big a problem this is... it's costing us out of our own pocket to basically fix the problems inside the boundaries of houses. The problem is not going to be rectified until we treat the water."

The Department of Housing says it has not been dragging its feet; the design of the new water treatment plant is reportedly complete and a tender for works will be advertised sometime soon. Department estimates say construction should begin this year.
