Perth’s water supply and options for recycling are the focus of an international water conference this week.

The International Conference on Sustainable Water Management has brought together industry professionals and researchers from 21 different countries to bring their work and experience to achieve sustainability in the water sector.

The conference began with a public meeting in Fremantle on the weekend, where international water experts compared Perth’s water management to other programs in place across Australia and Singapore.

Throughout the week, a range of different water management options are being discussed, including the treatment of wastewater, reuse of greywater, desalination and the sustainable use of Perth’s water resources.

“This conference will act as a conversation starter towards achieving sustainable water management in Western Australia,” said Dr Kuruvilla Matthew, adjunct senior lecturer from Murdoch University.

“It is becoming increasingly important for Western Australian residents to consider the use of waste water more broadly in the community.”

WA’s Minister for Water, Mia Davies, gave the inaugural speech at the conference, which runs until Thursday 3 December.
