Dry times in South East Queensland mean some of Brisbane’s water will be pumped up to the Sunshine Coast.

Water authorities say the dry conditions have for the first time prompted it to start sending Brisbane drinking water to the Sunshine Coast.

The Sunshine Coast’s main dam, Baroon Pocket at Montville, is sitting at its lowest level in over a decade.

Seqwater has announced a plan to send 60 million litres of treated water north each day, until some rain comes to refill the dam.

The stream will flow via the north-south interconnector pipeline, which was initially intended to send water in the other direction.

“The development and construction of this pipeline means that we have for the first time been able to move water around the region and certainly as a water authority, a bulk water authority, [it] gives us fantastic flexibility,” Seqwater spokesperson Mike Foster told reporters.

“The big news out of this is that it is the first time we're moving it around and it really is an indication of how this system is designed to work, which is really moving water to where it's needed most.”
