Western Australia’s Water Corporation has responded to a community backlash, and revealed new details on its wastewater disposal plans.

Water Corporation CEO Sue Murphy told Parliament this week that she “regrets terribly” that “overzealous employees” stormed ahead with plans to dump desalination brine discharge at Perkins Beach, without community consultation.

She said the utility is now looking at three alternative options: trucking the brine to the Binningup desalination plant; dumping the water in unused ponds near Albany; or bringing in licensed waste handlers to dispose of the brine as they see fit.

Ms Murphy said the Water Corporation was working through the feasibility and viability of the options, and could not reveal the estimated cost of any such measures just yet.
