We offer three exciting opportunities for Research / Senior Research Officers with differentspecialisations, to join our world-leading institution at James Cook University (JCU). Fixed term appointments to 31 December 2020, these positions are based at the Townsville campus, located in picturesque tropical north Queensland, where you can enjoy a tropical lifestyle whilst still achieving your career goals.
About the positions
As part of the TropWATER Freshwater Ecology Group these positions will contribute to scientific advice for the management of agriculture, mining and water extraction impacts on freshwater ecosystems, including habitat protection, wetland restoration and the control of invasive species. These positions require a high degree of initiative and self-motivation and an ability to conceive, plan and manage commercial projects in conjunction with external parties.
Vacancy ref number 16146 – Research / Senior Research Officer, Freshwater
You will contribute to an expanding program within TropWATER - coastal river ecology, freshwater and coastal water quality and wetland systems repair. Working with a team of scientists you will be instrumental in completing research and consulting projects for a range of government, industry and non-government partners. Current key areas of project activity include wetland systems repair and coastal water quality.
Vacancy ref number 16147 - Research / Senior Research Officer, eDNA
This position will see you contribute to the new and rapidly evolving area of molecular genetics by applying environmental DNA analysis to detect the occurrence of species in water bodies through the genetic analysis of water and/or soil samples. Utilising your experience and specialist expertise in the field of eDNA genetics you may have a strong research background or a more applied background, working with external parties. The current program involves application of eDNA techniques to resolve distribution and management issues for a range of plant and animals species in northern Australia with an emphasis on applications in remote localities.
Vacancy ref number 16148 – Research / Senior Research Officer, Freshwater
Engaging with a range of externally contracted research and consulting activities, you will manage multiple projects serving industry (especially mining/refining) and other external clients across northern Australia. Your significant experience and expertise in the fields of water quality, limnology and hydrology of freshwater, estuarine and coastal marine systems will see you deliver professional advice around the management of complex fresh water environments, with key aspects comprising water quality monitoring, stream sediment and vegetation condition surveys, evaluation of water and sediment chemistry, mass balance and transport modelling, and limnology assessments.
Key duties across all three positions:
- Conduct both independent and team-based research and consulting activities associated with TropWATER projects.
- Prepare and negotiate research and consultancy funding proposals to external funding agencies,
- Design and execute specific research and monitoring programs as part of the freshwater and coastal ecology research group
- Plan, organise and undertake field programs and be prepared to participate in field work in remote locations.
About you
We are seeking dynamic and engaging Research experts with either a PhD or a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years professional experience in a related field who will relish the opportunity to further enhance your career whilst contributing to the continued success of the TropWATER programs.
You will also have:
- Experience managing projects individually or contributing significantly to the management of projects;
- Demonstrated history of research outputs including the production of technical reports and the publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed journals;
- Experience with organizing and managing field programs or similar logistical operations, including in remote locations.
- The ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a variety of key stakeholders.
