Senior Environmental Officer and Senior Officer (Pool)

 

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation Perth CBD Office, is planned to relocate to Joondalup in early 2019.

The DWER is a dynamic agency serving to make a difference by supporting a healthy environment and secure water resources for a liveable and prosperous Western Australia.

The department is responsible for all environmental and water regulation, creating a ‘one stop shop’ for industry and developers and a greater opportunity for streamlining and simplifying regulation.

The Department is looking to create a pool of suitable applicants for the following positions:

  • Senior Environmental Officer - Specified Callings Level 3
  • Senior Officer - Level 6

In the regulatory areas, Senior Environmental Officers may be responsible for the efficient and effective assessment of applications within Industry Regulation (inclusive of the Waste, Process and Resource sectors) and Native Vegetation Regulation. Officers in these areas will assess applications for works approvals, licences, permits and also offsets across the State and within target timeframes. Officers will also assist in the oversight and review of operational environmental management of activities subject to a works approvals or licence, and review the implementation and environmental effectiveness of decisions.

In servicing the Environmental Protection Authority, Senior Environmental Officers will be responsible for conducting environmental impact assessments of significant development proposals, and planning schemes, as well as developing policies and guidelines for important environmental matters.

Senior Officers can also be part of the Department’s State-wide compliance and enforcement of environmental legislation and approvals, including controlled waste, pollution response and illegal dumping.

  • experience in a compliance, enforcement, environmental assessment or licensing environment.  Where have you worked, what services have you provided and what skills do you have? 
  • skills in solving problems.  Tell us your skills in interpreting questions and creating effective solutions to those problems.
  • ability to talk and relate to people, and to lead and manage projects and colleagues in your team.  Tell us about your rapport building and leadership and management and project management skills; how you write to, communicate to or support people in different situations.
  • time management and organisational skills.  How do you prioritise, keep on top of your work load and meet changing deadlines.
  • knowledge or experience with the Environmental Protection Act 1986, associated legislation and policy to support government and organisational objectives. Be able to tell us how you refer to, use and apply policies, practices and/or legislation to assess potential environmental impacts and manage a range of environmental issues.
  • education or any formal training.  Under our legislation a Bachelor of Science, or similar is required.  Please include a copy of your degree and transcript in your application so we can do any required assessment and be sure to tell us about your experience too.
